The responsibilities of the coach changes depending on the age group you are coaching in, but I will try to give a good picture of the time and effort involved.
All coaches have to do mandated safety and coach training. Most only have to be done once or every few years, so it isn't too bad. We go into greater detail on each step of these trainings on our
Safety Courses and
Coach Training page under the menu "Training" above. Almost all of it is online with the exception of the in-person coach training.
You will be given training and a book with games to play with the kids in practice. We are also giving you an app that will give you videos and instructions for nearly anything you can want.
Here is how your time and responsibilities change with the ages:
U6You have one, one hour practice/game every Saturday. You will run one or two fun games and then they scrimmage. Essentially, instead of sitting in a chair during the games as a parent, you stand up and try to keep the kids involved. Very easy.
U7/U8You have one, one hour practice per week and one game on Saturday. You will usually run 2 or 3 games and then scrimmage at the end of every practice. You can just follow the app that tells you what to do (it is quite good).
U10 and aboveYou have two practices per week, and a game every Saturday. Ideally, you are looking at how you did on Saturday, and try to work on those skills the following week. If your defense needs improving, you can search in our app or on youtube "defensive drills for U10" and find ones you like.
Each of your parents will be given their responsibilities. Some will ref, some will assist or team manage, or do the snacks, etc. You are doing your part by spending a few hours per week coaching, so they can handle the rest.
